Without You - Sami Yusuf 2009

Without You Review - Sami Yusuf 2009

Sami Yusuf - Without You Album Cover

The highlight of the album is the track "Forever Palestine", a heartfelt song expressing the courage and endurance of the Palestinian people in these times of hardship and suffering. "Of the other songs in the album, Sallou is a beautiful synthesis of four different languages taking a different angle on the Danish cartoons controversy, while He is There, Without You, and Anything For You, all written by renowned British singer and songwriter Conner Reeves are songs that remind people of what they sometimes forget in their busy lives. A Thousand Times is a song about real friendship, while Not in My Name is an explosive song denouncing acts of violance - both written by Bara Kherigi. The song Never Never is influenced by Indian music and beautifully combines English, Hindi and Turkish. Salutation is a soft and meditative acapella track. The album also contains the hit single Asma Allah - the melodious ballad that was pre-released with a music video. All the songs in this album were composed by Sami Yusuf.

Al Muallim - Sami Yusuf 2003

Al Mu'Allim Review - Sami Yusuf 2003

Sami Yusuf - Al-Muallim Album Cover

When al-Mu’allim was released in 2003 it became, quite literally without exaggeration an instant HIT in and around the Muslim world, spending 12 weeks at the top of the charts in both Egypt and Turkey. It revolutionized the term “Islamic anasheed” and popularized it across the entire Muslim world. Even pop singers began implementing and in some cases copying the trend, comfortably incorporating “religion” and “faith” into their repertoire - which they would have otherwise never done had it not been for the immense success of al- Mu’allim.

Think tanks, scholars, philosophers, actors and actresses could not help but notice the great success Sami’s music was having in the Muslim world - particularly in the Arab world and in Turkey. In short, Al Mu’allim was a ‘breath of fresh air’ in the music world and was a groundbreaking debut album that redefined Nasheed, selling over three million copies and bringing much joy to the hearts and minds of many music/anashid lovers.

My Ummah - Sami Yusuf 2005

My Ummah Review - Sami Yusuf 2005

Sami Yusuf - My Ummah Album Cover

Following al-Mu’allim came the groundbreaking, genre-defining album, My Ummah. Moving on from al-Mu’allim it was no longer ‘percussive’ or ‘anasheed’ orientated. Musically, it combined several different genres, perfectly blending into one another and exposing the listener to some truly powerful pieces of music. Whether it’s the haunting and epic string arrangement of “Munajaat” or the lamenting of the nay flute in “Muhammad SAS”, one never ceases to be amazed by the musicality, versatility and virtuosity of Sami Yusuf and his gift for creating and combining both music and message. The album revolutionized “Islamic music” OR “Fan al Haadif” (OR “art with a meaning/message”). The most commercially succesful track was the Afghani folkloric song “Hasbi Rabbi” which became the biggest selling download in the entire Arab world (and much of the Muslim world) and which ultimately led to Sami being dubbed by Time Magazine as “Islam’s Biggest Rockstar”.

The Kite Runner - Sami Yusuf 2007

The Kite Runner Review - Sami Yusuf 2007

Sami Yusuf - The Kite Runner Album Cover

In early 2007 the critically acclaimed Oscar winning director Marc Forster (he won an Oscar for directing “Monster’s Ball” and his credits include the latest James Bond blockbuster hit “Quantum of Solace”) personally contacted Sami Yusuf, asking him to compose the Sound Track for “the Kite Runner”. Marc and Sami (along with the Paramount Picture’s artistic directors) spoke at length on how it was to sound.

They had already asked to use an excerpt from the track “Supplication” but were now asking for Sami to deliver the entire Sound Track. Sadly, mainly due to time restraints on both sides, the sound track never materialized. However, “Supplication” was used and has become a much-loved element in this remarkable film. Marc and Sami remain friends and are hoping to work together in the near future.

Sami Yusuf - You Came To Me Lyrics

You Came To Me Lyrics - Sami Yusuf 2009

You came to me in that hour of need
When I was so lost, so lonely
You came to me took my breath away

Showed me the right way, the way to lead

You filled my heart with love
Showed me the light above
Now all I want Is to be with you

You are my One True love
Taught me to never judge
Now all I want Is to be with you

You came to me in a time of despair
I called on you, you were there
Without You what would my life mean?
To not know the unseen, the worlds between

For you I'd sacrifice
For you I'd give my life
Anything, just to be with you

I feel so lost at times
By all the hurt and lies
Now all I want Is to be with you

Showed right from wrong
Taught me to be strong
Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul ALLAH

You came to me
In that hour of need
Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul ALLAH

You filled my heart with love
Showed me the light above
Now all I want is to be with you

You are my One True love
Taught me to never judge
Now all I want Is to be with you

CHORUS (currently X2)
